Soul Temperature

Soul Temperature

A few degrees can take our bodies from pleasure to significant discomfort and even pain. A typical adult’s body temperature ranges from ninety-seven to ninety-nine degrees Fahrenheit. That’s a slim fluctuation in this world of incredible variance.  Our entire system responds when our temperature goes up or down a couple of degrees.

On a beautiful spring day, we can enjoy the outdoors for hours. A few months later, we may find ourselves shedding as much clothing as possible as the temperature rises a few more degrees.  In the seasons following, we scramble for blankets and more layers when the temperature drops.

Imagine attempting to bake a cake in an oven with an inaccurate temperature gauge. A few degrees can distinguish between a perfectly baked cake and a disastrous burnt one.

We pay attention to the temperature because it affects the outcome of our everyday lives.

What about our soul temperature? Do we take such care regarding fluctuations in our spiritual climate?

Our soul temperature could be even more critical. When our soul temperature goes cold, we can try to cover it with layers of false identity, trying to keep the chill from reaching the surface. We can throw off relationships and wise counsel when our soul temperature runs hot.

We were created to consistently and intentionally connect with our Creator. Without a mindful connection to Him, we will lean one way or the other, looking for fulfillment elsewhere. It might be time to take our soul temperature when we are repeatedly too busy to spend time alone with Christ.

Ask yourself. Am I comfortable sitting quietly with the Lord, disconnected from media, others, and electronics? If not, could you be layering with false identities?

Ask those closest to you if they feel thrown off or tossed aside by you.  If so, your soul temperature might be running too hot for honest engagement.  Ask Jesus to search you and reveal any unclean thing in your physical or thought life.

When we intentionally create space to sit with Jesus, allowing Him to reveal His best for us, we will return to the perfect soul temperature designed by the Father.  We can then throw off the things of this world and sense the Lord covering us in His love.

And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark,
He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed.      – Mark 1:35

Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  – Matthew 11:28
